Born in Hammond, Louisiana; graduated from Bowdoin College; married Betty Werlein in 1931; founder and editor of the Daily Courier, Hammond, Louisiana, and the Delta Democrat-Times, Greenville, Mississippi; won a Pulitzer Prize in 1946 for his editorials; active in civil rights.
