Cotterill, R. S. (Robert Spencer), 1884-1967
Robert Spencer Cotterill, historian and educator, was born in Fleming County, Kentucky, in 1884, at the now forgotten village of Battle Run. Cotterill was one of the founding members of the Southern Historical Association and a member of the history department at the University of Louisville. In 1928, he joined the history department at the Florida State College of Women (now Florida State University). Cotterill authored several works including "A Short History of the Americas" and the "Old South". Cotterill also established himself as an authority on southern Indians. Cotterill had completed a well-researched "History of Fleming County", due to his death in 1967, that went unpublished. [Kentucky Encyclopedia].
