Kubby, Karen, 1960-

Karen Kubby was born August 8, 1960 in Virginia. She lived in Iowa City briefly in the early 1970s, and returned in 1978 to attend the University of Iowa. As a member of the newly revived Iowa Socialist Party Kubby became active in university and community issues such as the fair rent campaign in the early 1980s. She lost races for Iowa City Council in 1985 and 1987, but won a seat in 1989. She held that position for 11 years and was the only Socialist Party office holder during that time. While in office she continued her peace and social activism, and was arrested in a protest against the Gulf War. In 1999 she became director of the Emma Goldman clinic in Iowa City.
