Mirisch Corporation

Walter M. Mirisch was born on Nov. 8, 1921 in NYC; attended CCNY; BA, Univ. of WI, 1942; graduated, Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration, 1943, following his WWII service, Mirisch began producing films for Monogram Pictures; became executive producer at Allied Artists in 1951; formed an independent production company, Mirisch Company, in 1957 with his brother Marvin and half brother Harold; Mirisch Corporation's list of films includes 3 Best Picture Academy Award winners: The apartment (1960), West side story (1961), and In the heat of the night (1967); Mirisch was president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) from 1973-77 and was presented with the Thalberg Memorial Award (1978) and the Hersholt Humanitarian Award (1983) by AMPAS; received the UCLA medal in 1989.
