State legislator from Blackville, S.C.; at the time of his death, recognized as the longest-serving state legislator in the U.S. (1933-1986); served in S.C. General Assembly as Representative from Barnwell, S.C. (1933-1986); served as Speaker of the House (1935-1946 and 1951-1971); graduated from USC in 1917 with a law degree.
