Gardiner, J. Stanley (John Stanley), 1872-1946

John Stanley Gardiner was born on 24 January 1872 in Belfast. He was educated at Marlborough College and Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. In 1902, he was appointed demonstrator of animal morphology at the University of Cambridge, a post he held until 1908, and from 1903 until 1909 served as dean of Gonville and Caius College. He participated in several expeditions to the Maldives, Indian Ocean, and the Seychelles, publishing books on the coral reefs and fauna of the region. Between 1909 and 1937, he was emeritus professor of zoology at the University of Cambridge. Gardiner was a member of the Committee on Fishery Investigations and of the Government Advisory Committee on Fisheries, and in 1920 was appointed director of scientific investigations for the Ministry of Fisheries. He died on 28 February 1946.
