Hart, Emanuel B. (Emanuel Bernard), 1809-1897

Emanuel Bernard Hart (October 27, 1809 – August 29, 1897) was an American politician. A member of the Democratic Party, he notably served as a U.S. Representative from New York's 3rd congressional district between 1851 and 1853. Hart was New York's first Jewish congressman.

Born in New York City, Hart attended the public schools and prepared for college. He engaged in mercantile pursuits, served as a colonel in the militia, and as a member of the board of aldermen in 1845. After falling short in his bid to enter Congress in 1848, Hart was elected as in 1850 and served one term. After leaving Congress, he was appointed by President Buchanan surveyor of the port of New York, serving from 1857 to 1861. He later served as member of the city board of assessors, studied law, and was admitted to the bar in 1868. From 1870 to 1876, Hart served as president of Mount Sinai Hospital. He served as commissioner of immigration from 1870 to 1873 and excise commissioner in 1879. He died in New York City August 29, 1897. He was interred in Cypress Hills Cemetery, Brooklyn, New York.
