Smith, Joseph Rowe.
Joseph Rowe Smith was born in Stillwater, New York on Sept. 8, 1802. He graduated from West Point, U.S. Military Academy in 1823 and served in the Florida war, 1837-1842; Mexican War, and returned in 1861 because of a debilitating wound to his left arm. In 1864 he was appointed Mustering and Disbursing Officer for Michigan, with headquarters on the Great Lakes. In 1865 Smith was brevetted Brigadier-General for his long and honorable military service. Joseph R. Smith died in Monroe, Michigan on Sept. 3, 1868.
