Surtz, Edward, 1909-1973

Born July 5, 1909; died January 18, 1973. Early English Renaissance scholar. Edward Louis Surtz, S.J., was born in Cleveland. He entered the Society of Jesus in1931 after receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree from John Carroll University. In 1934 he received his Master of Arts in English from Xavier University, and his Ph. D. in English from Harvard University followed in 1948. From 1936 to 1939 Surtz taught at Loyola Academy in Chicago, and from 1948 until his death in 1973 he was a member of the English department faculty at Loyola University Chicago. Surtz was an influential teacher and scholar with an international reputation. He is best known for his work in Early English Renaissance, specifically focusing on Thomas More, St. John Fisher, and Henry VIII.
