Wisconsin. Bureau of Health Statistics

A specific office within the State Board of Health (WIHV85-A531) charged with registering vital statistics data first appears as the Bureau of Vital Statistics in the 1919 Blue Book. Later designated the Division of Vital Statistics, this office under Chapter 75, Laws of 1967, became the Bureau of Health Statistics in the Division of Health (WIHV85-A364) within the new Department of Health and Social Services (WIHV85-A374). In March 1984, the Bureau's name was changed to the Center for Health Statistics and Analysis. The above form of agency name is used for all records created by this office from 1876 when the Board of Health was established, to the present.

The Bureau is responsible for statewide registration of births, deaths, marriages, and divorces and gathers and analyzes health and health-related data on Wisconsin's population. Information collected includes, in addition to vital statistics, demographic data, data on healthcare manpower and facilities, and data on hospital and nursing home patients.
