Vanderhorst, Arnoldus, 1748-1815
Christ Church Parish, S.C. plantation owner and politician. Among other properties, Vanderhorst owned houses in Charleston (S.C.) and a plantation on Kiawah Island (S.C.). He was elected as a state representative for his parish in 1772 and afterwards held many political offices, including Governor of South Carolina from 1794 to 1796. During the Revolutionary War Vanderhorst served as captain of a militia company stationed at Haddrell's Point (S.C.), and colonel (1782) under General Francis Marion. He married Elizabeth Raven in 1771; among their six children was John Stanyarne Vanderhorst (1781-1816).
