Millican, Arthenia J. Bates, 1920-2012

African American poet, educator, and lecturer; Arthenia Bernetta Jackson was born, 1920, in Sumter, S.C., the daughter of Susan Emma David Jackson and Calvin Shepherd Jackson; married to Noah Bates, 1950 - 1956; married Wilbert Millican in 1969; education at various colleges, including: BA, 1941, from Morris College (Sumter, S.C.); creative writing workshop, 1947, lead by Langston Hughes at Atlanta University; and PhD, 1972, Louisiana State University.

Millican taught at several high schools in S.C., Virginia and Mississippi, before moving to the college level, where she held positions that included: Chair of English department, 1947-1949 at Morris College (Sumter, S.C.); instructor in English, 1955-1956, at Mississippi Valley State University; instructor, assistant professor, associate professor, professor of English, 1956-1974 at Southern University (Baton Rouge, La.); professor of English, 1974-1977, at Norfolk State College (Va.); professor of English and creative writing, 1977-1980, at Southern University; retired, 1980, and later returned to her hometown of Sumter, S.C., in 1992.
