Kent, Allen.
Allen Kent (1921- ), one of the nation's pioneers in information retrieval, established, in 1963, a center dealing with teaching, technology and research related to knowledge availability systems at the University of Pittsburgh. Kent graduated from City College of New York with a B.S. in chemistry in 1942. From 1955 to 1963 Kent was the Associate Director and an Associate Professor of the Documentation and Communications Research Center at Western Reserve University of Ohio.
Between 1963 and 1976, Kent held various positions at the University of Pittsburgh, including Director of the Office of Communications Services, Chairman of the Interdisciplinary Doctoral Program in Information Science and Professor of Information Science, Education and Computer Science. From 1976 to 1991, he served as Associate Dean of the School of Library and Information Science, and as Interim Dean of the School from 1985 to 1986.
