Born in Posen, Prussia 1861, died in Ascona, Switzerland 1944; politician, lawyer in Berlin; member of the Sozialistische Arbeiterpartei Deutschlands (SAPD) from 1884; prominent counsel in political trials; contributed to the Sozialistische Monatshefte and the Berliner Tageblatt; member of the Reichstag in 1898-1918 and 1919-1920; Prussian Minister of Justice, December 1918 and of Home Affairs, March 1919-March 1920; removed from his post after the Kapp-Putsch; member of the Staatsgerichtshof zum Schutze der Republik 1923-1925; contributed to the congress Das Freie Wort in February 1933 which was disbanded by the police; emigrated to Switzerland.
