Holmes, John Clouch, 1809-1887.

Born at Salem, Mass., Sept. 25, 1809. Came to Detroit and worked as a clerk in store of John Palmer & Bro., later became a partner in the business. Later went into the real estate business and devoted much time to educational and scientific studies. In 1852 established the Farmer's Companion and Horticultural Gazette which later merged with another publication. He was one of the organizers of the State Pioneer Society, the State Agricultural College and the Detroit Scientific Association. He was president of the Wayne Co. Pioneer Society. He was married to Jane Palmer, a daughter of his business partner and had no children. He died in Detroit Dec. 16, 1887. (from Mich. Pion. & Hist. Soc.
