Northland College (Ashland, Wis.)
In 1979, Northland College, assisted with funds from the National Endowment for the Arts, began to document ethnic traditions. The focus of their search was people of Scandinavian, Finnish, East European and Native American descent. They looked within a 60-radius of Ashland, Wisconsin and Hancock, Michigan. The result is over 100 hours of interviews and music recorded from regional ethnic performers in addition to folk music collections, books, bibliographies, reference guides and photographs.
