Creighton, Johnston Blakeley, 1822-1883.

Johnston Blakeley Creighton (1822-1883), who married Elizabeth W. Stringham, entered the Navy as a midshipman in 1838 and later became a lieutenant in 1853. After being commissioned as commander in 1862, Creighton commanded the steamer OTTAWA, part of the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron. In 1863, he was assigned to special duty and served as 4th commander of the steamer MAHASKA until being transferred to the MINGO, where he served as commander until the end of the Civil War. He became commandant of the Norfolk Navy Yard in 1879. During his naval career, Creighton served on the USS CUMBERLAND, USS NORTH CAROLINA, USS ONEIDA, USS WORCESTER and USS GUERRIER.
