Authorized by the Loyola University Board of Trustees in 1935, the School of Nursing was originally under the direction of a governing board composed of the directors of the nursing schools at five affiliated hospitals - St. Anne Hospital, St. Bernard Hospital, St. Elizabeth Hospital, Columbus Hospital, and Oak Park Hospital. Sr. Helen Jarrell, the director of the St. Bernard Nursing School, was appointed as Director in 1935; she later became the first Dean of the Loyola University School of Nursing. Ms. Gladys Kiniery served as the second dean of the school from 1947 to 1966 and was followed by Mary Patricia Lodge (1966-1969), Essie Anglum (Acting Dean, 1969-1970), Margaret Mary Malone (1970-1974), Julia Lane (1974-1991), Eileen McQuaid Dvorak (1991-1992), Mary Ann McDermott (Acting Dean, 1992), Eileen McQuaid Dvorak (1992-1994), Mary Ann McDermott (Acting Dean, 1994-1995), Shirley L. Dooling (1995-1998), Carrol Gold (Acting Dean, 1998-1999), Sheila Haas (1999-2007), Ida M. Androwich (Acting Dean, 2007), Mary Klotz Walker (2007-2009), and Vicki A. Keough (2009-present).
