Canadian historian and author. Born in Bertie Township, Welland County, Ontario. Enlisted as an ensign in the militia in 1877; retired as brigadier-general in 1921. Cruikshank served the Public Archives of Canada in various capacities, was a member of the Royal Society of Canada, and president of the Ontario Historical Society
