Birks, Norman A.

Norman A. Birks (b. 1892 near Sheffield, Yorkshire), Lieutenant, 9th Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment, seconded to the Motor Machine Gun Service, served on the Western Front, 1914-1916. He was transferred to the RFC (Royal Flying Corps) in 1916 and served with No. 29 Squadron on the Western Front. He was shot down on 5 Apr 1917 and held as a POW (Prisoner of War) at Holzminden, 1917-1918. He escaped, but was recaptured.
