Lawler, Lillian B. (Lillian Beatrice), 1898-1990

Lillian Beatrice Lawler, scholar and professor, was born on June 30, 1897 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She received a bachelor's degree in 1919 from the University of Pittsburgh and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the State University of Iowa (now the University of Iowa) in 1921 and 1925 respectively. After spending another year studying at the American Academy in Rome she became assistant professor of classics at the University of Kansas, Lawrence from 1926 to 1929.

By far the largest portion of Lawler's career was spent at Hunter College in New York, culminating in the rank of full professor in 1955 and then emeritus status in 1959. She was a visiting professor at the State University of Iowa from 1961 to 1967 and remained in the Iowa City area until her death on December 13, 1990.
