Smith, Robert, active 1862

Robert A. Smith (d. 1862) was a prominent resident of Macon, Georgia. He was active in political and civic affairs. In 1857 he was elected captain of the Macon Volunteers; the company entered into the Confederate Army as Company D., 2nd Georgia Battalion Infantry. He served in this company for one year, then raised the 44th Georgia Regiment Volunteers and was elected its Colonel. He was killed in June 1862 in the fighting around Richmond.
