Speed family.
The Speed family is one of Louisville's oldest and most prominent families. Judge John Speed owned a hemp plantation near Louisville, Kentucky. His son, Joshua Fry Speed, was a close friend of Abraham Lincoln. The Shallcross's are related to the Speeds through Mary Ellen Shallcross who married William Pope Speed, a son of Lucy Gilmer Fry Speed and Judge John Speed.
