The Santee-Cooper Navigation and Hydro-Electric Project to improve navigation on and provide hydro-electric power from the Santee and Cooper Rivers was authorized by the South Carolina legislature in 1934. Federal approval for the Project was granted in 1935 and construction takes place from 1939-1941; power generation begins in 1942. Fossil fuel generating stations constructed in 1951, 1966, 1972, 1977 and 1981 and a nuclear plant, in cooperation with South Carolina Electric & Gas, opened in 1984.
