The illustrations, most of which are cuttings from magazines, periodicals and other ephemeral or hard-to-get publications, include captions in German. A detailed list of the contents is in the inside front cover. The first image in the book is of Prince Henry of Russia in an airplane with the quote "Ein Flugapparat ist weder ein offenes Grab, noch ein Kinderspielzeug" ("A flying machine is neither an open grave nor a toy for children"). In the diary, Hatchett talks about the cities in which he traveled; the various landscapes he passed; and each town's mining, manufacturing and metallurgy industries. He started his tour in London and traveled to Devon where he saw the Portland stone quarries and the Bovey lignite mines. He then went to Cornwall where he observed mining and smelting operations and collected materials. His next stop was Birmingham where he visited Boulton & Watt and other factories of brass-ware before proceeding to the great iron works at Coalbrookdale. Hatchett travels then to Derbyshire where he describes the city's lead mines. He also visited the steel works in Sheffield and chemical and lead works in Newcastle. He traveled north to Edinburgh where he spent two weeks in academic circles. Also in Scotland he visited lead mines at Tyndrum and Glasgow. It includes finely illuminated borders and sarlauh on initial pages but dampstained. Some color is fading. The volume also includes some notes about the manuscript, probably from the 1940s. The second half of the volume details his life as an engineer and refugee during the Crimean War and his efforts to find further employment and full reimbursement for his loss of property at the outbreak of the war. Upton talks in detail about how his neighbors in Sevastopol had to flee their villas at the approach of troops, and the looting of his property. There are copies of letters by Upton begging for a new job after the war. He wrote several notable people including Lord Raglan and even Emperor Napoleon. The volume also includes a proposal to beautify, improve and develop the banks of the River Thames which Upton sent to the editor of the Illustrated London news in 1856. A letter to Upton (1855, May 7) and a draft of another letter were found In the front cover of the volume. At the end of the manuscript is a hand-drawn "Table of Nominal Horse Power of High Pressure Engines. Length of Stroke in Feet." No covers; binding is coming loose. In the letter, Eiffel describes his book and talks about the Eiffel Tower, its history and the modifications done to to the tower for the Exposition of 1900. The unknown author describes recipes for different methods of refining and assaying, giving practical advice as to what type of vessels and what type of ovens to use. He seems to have been a master of a mint, as he appends two long lists, one of silver, the other of gold coins issued from various Italian, French, Hungarian, German and English mints, and all current in Italy in 1526.
