        </p>
        <p>At the age of thirty-three, Gwendolyn Brooks became the first African American to win the Pulitzer Prize for poetry. Her legacy as one of the most influential poets of the Twentieth Century endures. Richard Wright, an early advocate of Brooks, once said that her poetry captured "the pathos of petty destinies, the whimper of the wounded, the tiny incidents that plague the lives of the desperately poor, and the problems of common prejudice" (Watkins, 2000, The New York Times ).</p>
        <p>Brooks was born on June 7, 1917 in Topeka Kansas. Shortly after her birth, Brooks's parents, David and Keziah Brooks, relocated the family to South Side Chicago. She remained in South Side until her death. At a very early age, Brooks began to write poetry. When she was thirteen years old her first poem was published in the American Childhood Magazine . At a crucial point in her creative development, Brooks met Langston Hughes and James Weldon Johnson, both of whom encouraged her poetry writing. She was educated at several white, black, and integrated high schools in Chicago. During her school years, Brooks prolifically published her poems, largely as a regular contributor to the "Lights and Shadows" poetry column of the Chicago Defender . In 1936, Brooks graduated from Wilson Junior College.</p>
        <p>In 1938, Brooks and Henry Blakely were married. Their first child, Henry Jr., was born in 1940 and their daughter Nora was born in 1951. During this period, Brooks began to win critical acclaim for her poetry. She won the 1943 Midwestern Writer's Conference Poetry Award. Shortly thereafter, A Street in Bronzeville, her first book of poetry, was published by Harper and Row (1945). The instant critical acclaim this book received was followed by her first Guggenheim Fellowship award and a nomination to the American Academy of Arts and Letters. In 1950, her second published collection, Annie Allen, won the Pulitzer Prize for poetry.</p>
        <p>Brooks went on to publish additional books of poetry, a novel, an autobiography, essays, reviews, speeches, and a play. Following her Pulitzer Prize, she issued Maud Martha (1953), a novel that was praised by reviewers but did not gain wide readership. Bronzeville Boys and Girls (1956) a collection of children's poetry, The Bean Eaters (1960), and Selected Poems (1963) followed the novel. One of her most popular volumes of poetry, We Real Cool, was released in 1966. With Broadside Press, a small black publisher founded by poet Dudley Randall, Brooks published Riot (1969), Family Pictures (1970), and her autobiography, Report from Part One (1972).</p>
        <p>Ms. Brooks's teaching career began at Columbia College in Chicago in 1963. Over the course of her career, she taught creative writing at many different institutions including: Northeastern Illinois State College, Elmhurst College, Columbia University, City College of New York, and the University of Wisconsin at Madison.</p>
        <p>In 1967, Brooks became involved in the Black Arts movement while attending the Fisk University Writers Conference in Nashville. At this point, she dropped her publisher Harper and Row to work with smaller publishing houses. While her poems always addressed social issues, her writing became markedly more concerned with the black experience in the 1960s.</p>
        <p>Brooks succeeded Carl Sandburg as poet laureate of Illinois in 1968 and remained in this post until her death. Her dedication to this role and to bringing poetry to the people of Illinois was deep. Brooks gave many public readings and was an active visitor to Chicago schools and prisons. Her poetry workshops and contests for young people were meant to inspire and teach children that poetry can be a part of every day life.</p>
        <p>Over the course of her career, Brooks received many honors. In 1976, she became the first black woman to be elected to the National Institute of Arts and Letters. The Library of Congress invited her to serve as poetry consultant in 1985. In 1994, the National Endowment for the Humanities named her its Jefferson Lecturer, the government's highest honor for achievement in the humanities. Brooks received honorary doctorate degrees from over 50 colleges and universities in recognition of her contribution to literature.</p>
        <p>Brooks died in her home in Chicago on December 3, 2000.</p>

Letters and poems to Rosenberger by selected American poets in response to his query for new poems to inculde in the column, "A Selection of recent american poems" to be published in the British periodical, Poetry quarterly. Only poems of interest to Rosenberger appear in this collection; some poets state that they are submitting a certain number of poems; and a small number of the poems are in this collection. The collection contains one or two poems from the following poets: John Malcolm Brinnin, Richard Eberhart, Frederick Ebright, Robert E. Hayden, Langston Hughes, Rolfe Humphries, Randall Jarrell, Weldon Kees, Coman Leavenworth, Ruth Lechitner, Eve Merriam, Josephine Miles, Howard Moss, Kenneth Patchen, Selden Rodman, Karl Jay Shapiro, Theodore Spencer, Wallace Stevens, Mark Van Doren, Byron Vazakas, Richard Wilbur, William Carlos Williams, and Marya Zaturenska. Poets represented by correspondence only include, but are not limited to, Gwendolyn Brooks, E.E. Cummings, and Marianne Moore. Collection also contains letters and poems to Rosenberger concerning the inclusion of poems in American sampler (Prairie Press, 1951), also edited by Rosenberger. Also includes the two issues of poetry quarterly in which Rosenberger's selections appear.

The Michel Fabre archives of African American arts and letters consist of correspondence, writings, and printed material relating to expatriate writers, artists, musicians, and cultural figures, as well as Fabre's personal and business correspondence, works authored by Fabre, research files, conference materials, photographs, and audiovisual materials. The largest segment of the collection contains papers related to the work of African American writers, musicians, and artists from the United States and the Caribbean and of expatriates living in France. Included are works by writers such as Gwendolyn Brooks, Horace Cayton, James Emanuel, Chester Himes, Langston Hughes, and Richard Wright. Materials include items such as letters, typescripts, manuscripts, printed material, and personal materials. An avid collector, Fabre acquired many manuscripts as well as rare books. The rich collection of materials related to Chester Himes stems both from his personal friendship with the Himes family and his acquisition of Himes's publisher's files from Yves Malartic. He also acquired the library of Rene Maran, which is now at Emory. The collection's second series contains a wide range of general correspondence, written to Fabre by friends, colleagues, and publishers, while the third series represents a broad scope of Fabre's published works. Included are reprints of articles Fabre published in numerous French and American scholarly journals, as well as reviews of his work and early drafts of some pieces. An additional strength of the collection is the numerous conference programs and conference related material preserved by Fabre and relating to conferences he participated in or organized. Also included are many of Fabre's research files, materials he collected relating to Richard Wright, and a substantial number of photographs of Wright as well as numerous other writers and artists.

The papers contain manuscripts of the poems "Motto," "Youth," "Snail," "Alabama earth (At Booker Washington's grave)," "Cross" and "Mississippi-1955 ("To the memory of Emmett Till lynched in Mississippi, USA/August 1955")," and reprints of "Low to high" and "High to low." There are forty-four letters, postcards and notes to Youra Qualls and Ina Qualls Steele in which Hughes discusses speaking engagements, travel including Africa in 1962, his writing, and the production of his dramas. He mentions the N.A.A.C.P. briefly several times, and there are single, brief references to Josephine Baker, Billy Holliday, Arna Bontemps, Ralph Ellison, Melvin Tolson, Nina Simone, Carmen Amaya, and Gwendolyn Brooks. Eight letters to journalist and N.A.A.C.P. public relations director Henry Lee Moon discuss his work and mention Tuskegee Institute, Zora Neale Hurston, and Alain Locke. Of interest is a detailed account of a speaking engagement in Chapel Hill, N.C., and parties given in his honor. A letter to Walter Goldwater concerns publicity for two books, one to Peggy Hunter apologizes for not speaking at Texas College for Negroes, and one to a 5th grade class thanks them for interest in his books and urges them to help their parents be more tolerant. The collection also contains three photographs and a reproduction of a pastel portrait of Hughes; a playbill "Just around the corner"; a promotional circular for "Fight for freedom: the story of the NAACP"; a catalog with titles of recordings by him; a program for "The prodigal son"; a promotional circular "Langston Hughes: poet of the people"; a memorial service program; a Langston Hughes Society pamphlet; and sheet music "Checkin on the freedom train."

The papers of Adrienne Kennedy, ca. 1954-1992, document her evolution from an aspiring writer to a successful playwright. All of Kennedy's plays are represented in this collection, from her Obie Award winning Funnyhouse of a Negro (1964) to her most recent production, Ohio State Murders (1992). Additionally, manuscripts for several unproduced or incomplete plays are present, such as an untitled play about Soledad prisoner George Jackson. Manuscripts dating from Kennedy's beginnings as a writer in the 1950s include the play "The Pale Blue Flowers," as well as other plays, short stories, and novels. Other writings include the memoir People Who Led to My Plays and a screenplay about blues musician Robert Johnson. The works exist as notebooks, holograph and typed notes, outlines, proposals, and drafts, playscripts, and screenplays, as well as galleys, page proofs, and photocopies of publications. The Career Papers contribute to further knowledge of and understanding of Kennedy and her work through award certificates, biographical data, contracts, correspondence, manuscripts and publications about Adrienne Kennedy, production materials from her plays, publicity, reviews, royalty statements, and sound and video recordings. The correspondence, 1963-1992, generally concerns Kennedy's career as a playwright, writer, and educator, though some correspondence is of a more personal nature. Significant correspondents include Edward Albee, Imamu Amiri Baraka, Gwendolyn Brooks, Ed Bullins, Joseph Chaikin, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Gerald Freedman, Nikki Giovanni, Elizabeth Hardwick, James Earl Jones, Michael Kahn, Elia Kazan, Galt MacDermot, Theodore Mann, William Marshall, Mike Nichols, Joseph Papp, Harold Pinter, Ishmael Reed, Jerome Robbins, John Selby, Victor Spinetti, Fay Weldon, Edgar White, Audrey Wood, and others. Documentation of various productions of Ms. Kennedy's plays, 1963-1992, consists of brochures, cast lists, clippings, contact lists, drawings, flyers, musical scores (by Cecil Taylor for A Rat's Mass), photographs, posters, programs, publicity, rehearsal schedules, reviews, scripts, sound and video recordings, tickets, etc.

She send him a list of names for him to use in his new book. Last week, she says that she had sent him a booklet containing names of Penwomen. She also had the pleasure of telling, everyone at her branch, about our visit. They were interested in hearing about him, Mrs. Markham, and his library. She askes him about his health and about Virgil. Now she is at their mountain cabin near Santa Cruz. Her children love to visit Villa Montatve at Saratoga. And that Senator Phelan donated that as a park to the San Francisco Art Association. To her surprise, there is a bronze bust of Mr. Markham, John Muir, and Joaquin Miller. Also her daughter send her regards to Mr. and Mrs. Markham. Then she askes if Virgil could please return the poems from the last Montalve contest.
