Materials in the files concern Long's bitter conflict with the New Orleans City Commission Council and the legislative investigation of New Orleans city government that he instigated; the declaration of martial law in New Orleans following contested elections in 1933-1934 and the stationing of National Guard troops at the New Orleans Registrar's Office; the assassination of Long in 1935 and the conspiracy theories and rumors that swirled around his death; Assistant Attorney General O. John Rogge's indictments of key associates of Long after his death, among them Mayor Robert S. Maestri of New Orleans and Seymour Weiss, the former treasurer of Long's political organization; and possible tampering with Rogge's grand jury investigations of various Long allies. When the Party was reconstituted as the Communist Political Association later that year, Browder was chosen as its President, however he was expelled in 1946 following a debate over Party leadership.
