<biogHist>

Mauricio Lasansky was born October 12, 1914 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, to parents of Lithuanian ancestry. His interest in printing was stirred at a young age, because his father made engravings for printing the currency of Argentina. Young Lasansky began his formal printmaking education at the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes, and within three years was the director of the Free Fine Arts School in Argentina. In 1943 he studied at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York under a Guggenheim Fellowship. The grant was renewed the following year, allowing him to study intaglio printing, a printing process for which he became famous. In 1945 he joined the faculty at the University of Iowa School of Fine Arts, where he founded the Iowa Print Group. Mr. Lasansky retired as full professor in 1986.

Victoria Hutson Huntley was a painter and printmaker whose work was represented at Weyhe Gallery. Her frequent and long letters to Carl Zigrosser describe the progress of her work, new prints and sales, her teaching, her doubts about her work and it's direction, and troubles in her marriage. The letters are emotional and probing in nature, as if she were thinking out-loud. She frequently seeks advice from Zigrosser. Subjects include print schemes, her applications for Guggenheim Fellowships, set-backs to her work, life in the various parts of the country she lived in (Florida, Chicago, etc.), Associated American Artists, her friendship with John Taylor Arms, and her appraisal of the work of Mauricio Lasansky. The later letters are less about her work and more about her health. Included are photographs of Huntley, her work, and printed matter.

Mauricio Lasansky's letters to Carl Zigrosser concern his print studio and students at the State University of Iowa, grant applications, and their work with the Guggenheim Foundation. In 1959, Zigrosser was asked by the American Federation of Arts to curate a retrospective of Lasansky's prints. A large portion of the material in these files concerns that work. Included are letters with Robert Luck listing expenses and giving timetables and deadlines, Zigrosser's detailed notes on Lasansky's prints (giving dates, states and titles), a bibliography, and drafts of Zigrosser's essay.

The papers of James S. Schramm document his business and political affairs, as well as his activities in the arts. Although the first series is devoted to correspondence, more letters are filed throughout the papers. Some of the correspondents include: Robert K. Goodwin, Edith Gregor Halpert, Dwight Kirsch, David Kruidenier, George Nagel, and Sinclair Weeks. The personal papers grouping relates primarily to Schramm's military service. His speeches, make up the next section, however more speeches are found elsewhere in the papers. The fourth series is titled politics. Political speeches and correspondence are filed here. More than six boxes are devoted to Republican politics. Specifically the topics range from Lincoln Day dinners to Central Committee finances. There are folders on such Republican figures as Gerald Bogan and Nelson A. Rockefeller. The organizations section documents Schramm's association with such divergent groups as the Iowa Economic Council and Amherst College. The next four boxes are comprised of materials relating to U.S. trade missions and the Committee for a National Trade Policy. Included here are speeches, correspondence, policy manuals, etc. The final series concerns art and art collecting. Along with correspondence files there are folders on specific artists such as Mauricio Lasansky. There is also information regarding the Des Moines Art Center and the American Federation of Arts.

The papers of New York social realist painter and printmaker Jack Levine date from 1923-1999, and measure 3.2 linear feet. Levine's career is documented through biographical material, scattered letters, notes and a speech, writings, student drawings, three scrapbooks, printed material and nearly one linear foot of photographs of Levine, his family, and his colleagues.Found within the papers are two driver's licenses and several biographical accounts, and scattered letters from colleagues including one each from John Taylor Arms, Hyman Bloom, Leonard Bocour, René d'Harnoncourt, Lloyd Goodrich, Jacob Lawrence, and Homer Saint-Gaudens discussing various art-related events. There is only one carbon copy of a letter written by Levine. The correspondence includes oversized photographs of the members of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Additional photographs of the members are found in the Photograph series. Notes and writings are primarily typescripts about Jack Levine written by others. There is also a transcript of one speech, "Jack Levine Speaks Regarding the Donation of 108 of his Drawings to the Archives" delivered by Levine at the Fogg Art Museum.Artwork consists entirely of Levine's student drawings including anatomical studies, neighborhood genre scenes, copies of Old Masters, and a series of images of symphony musicians. Some of the drawings display themes that are reflected in his later paintings.Three scrapbooks contain clippings that document Levine's career and reflect his political interests. Additional printed material consists of a comprehensive collection of clippings and exhibition announcements and catalogs. There is also an announcement for a lecture by Levine, press releases, calendars of events, reproductions of artwork, programs, brochures including one for <emph render="italic">Facing East</emph>, a portfolio of Levine's prints, and three books.Photographs include numerous photographs of Levine throughout his artistic career, including images of his wife, painter Ruth Gikow, their daughter Susanna, and colleagues including Hyman Bloom, Leonard Bocour, Alexander Dobkin, Joachim Probst, and Russian poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko. Especially notable is a series of photographs of Levine printmaking with Emiliano Sorini and Ruth Gikow. A small album contains photographs of Levine and various buildings in Boston. There are also photographs of miscellaneous exhibition installations including Levine's retrospective at the Jewish Museum, and of artwork by Levine and others.Group photographs of the members of the American Academy of Arts and Letters are found here, and include Will Barnet, Paul Cadmus, Chuck Close, David Levine, George Tooker, and John Updike. Additional group photographs of the members that were originally enclosed with letters are found in the correspondence series.

Comprise correspondence, diaries, notebooks containing untitled poems, a book of sketches, and manuscripts of Manning's major poetical works. The secret sea is represented by several versions, including a version set to music by Denis ApIvor entitled Chorales. Twenty-eight diaries record daily events from 1957-77, and include poetry and drawings. Much of the correspondence simply thanks Manning for sending copies of his poetry, but letters from Henry Miller encourage him to write prose and say "those things which seem incommunicable," while letters from Mario Praz discuss the influence of Borges and T.S. Eliot on Manning's poetry.

Biographical material; correspondence; interviews; writings; journals; project files; teaching files; exhibition files; personal business records; printed and broadcast material; scrapbooks; photographic material; artwork; sketchbooks; as well as sound and video recordings and digital material, provide a comprehensive view of Lanyon's career and of art circles in Chicago and New York. Correspondence with artists and friends make up a significant portion of the collection. Project and exhibition files reflect her professional and artistic career. Thousands of slides and photographs document her life and artwork over seven decades, and over seventy sketchbooks are filled with student sketches, portraits of friends and family, and preliminary drawings.

There are photographs of Levine serving on art juries and panels with Eleanor Coen, Joseph Hirsch, Gabor Peterdi, Studs Terkel, and Max Weber, and attending events with Lawrence Fleischman, Betty Friedan, Edith Halpert, Mauricio Lasansky, Gypsy Rose Lee, Pope Paul VI, and Raphael Soyer.
