The Robert Sterling Clark reading library is comprised of ca. 800 titles that document a broad range of interests. Fiction and history predominate, though there is significant subject development in cookery and horses. The collection includes multiple volumes by a number of authors, including substantive first edition holdings of Pearl S. Buck, John Galsworthy, Sinclair Lewis, and P.G. Wodehouse. Many of the volumes include minor penciled annotations by RSC which record reading dates and brief thoughts on the volume in hand.

Collection includes over 900 offprints, pamphlets and books, some of which are marked or annotated by Gonzalez Lodge or others, and a transcription in manuscript of a book. The subjects of the texts cover these areas (and the collection arrangement falls roughly into this order): Julius Caesar, Cicero, Greek grammar, Latin grammar, Livy, Seneca the younger, Tacitus and Terence.

Gonzalez Lodge was born in Fort Littleton, Penn. on December 19, 1863. He received his education at Johns Hopkins (A.B. 1883; Ph.D. 1886). In turn, he was Professor of Greek at Davidson (1886-88); Professor of Latin at Bryn Mawr College (1889-1900); and Professor of Latin and Greek at the Teachers College (Columbia University) (1900-30). He was honored with the degrees of LL.D. by Franklin & Marshall in 1901 and Litt. D. by Columbia University (1929). He died in New Canaan, Conn. on December 23, 1942. Lodge is chiefly remembered as the founder and editor-in-chief of the Classical Weekly (now, Classical World) (1907-13); the writer of the Lexicon Plautinum (1901-24, 1925-33, issued originally in fascicles); and as one of the editors of the Gildersleeve-Lodge Latin Series. His dissertation was on Euripides; his first book on Plato. "Lodge was progressive in the best sense: he wanted to relate schoolwork to life, place language in its context of history and ethnology, put action into the classroom, and make the work important to students."

Bound volume of notes taken by Ernst von Leutsch at Karl Otfried Müller's lectures on Tacitus's Histories in the winter semester 1829-1830, at the University of Göttingen. At the back of the volume is a separate set of Leutsch's notes, taken at Müller's lectures on the victory odes (Epinikien) of Pindar, in the summer semester 1829, also at the University of Göttingen; those notes have their own title page, and are separately paginated (68 p.). The lectures on Tacitus have contemporary pagination up to p. 125, and then continue with further notes after several blank leaves. The lectures begin with an introduction (p. 1-22) discussing Tacitus's life and writings, and his character as a historian, followed by a commentary (Erklärende Anmerkungen; p. 22) on the histories, organized by book and chapter number, with notes on Book 1 (p. 22-111); Book 2 (p. 111-125, plus 10 p.); Book 3 and 4 (5 p.); and Book 5 (less than one page). The lectures on Pindar appear to address the Olympian odes 1, 2, 13 and 14; and Pythian odes 1-4.

Ernst von Leutsch's handwritten notes for lectures he gave on Tacitus at the University of Göttingen. In a section of the introduction concerning editions of Tacitus the latest date is 1876; that section has a similar appearance to much of the manuscript, although some material could date from earlier. A beginning date is difficult to estimate. Loose notes at the back are written on the versos of receipts addressed to Leutsch dated 1856 and 1862. The manuscript (perhaps 300 leaves or more) has an introduction (perhaps one fifth of the total) that discusses the development of historiography in Rome up until the time of Tacitus; the life of Tacitus; the history of his works; and the character of his Histories. The majority of the manuscript is then devoted to a detailed commentary on the Histories, Book 1, chapters 1-22, with running references to chapter number. Two inserted leaves at the beginning of the manuscript are written on the verso of printed fliers, signed by Leutsch in 1858, announcing the initiation of a supplement to the journal Philologus.
