Due to their size, several scrapbooks were separated and placed on the shelves adjacent to the collection. See the Separations Record below for more details. Box 1 - Box 3. Series II contains several different student publications, dating 1926-1968. The publications include the Signet yearbook, a literary magazine entitled the Wild Rose, and the student newspaper Stella Matutina. Lives of the Seniors, by the Juniors, a collection of short biographical sketches of the Senior Classes of 1938 and 1939, is included as is Trumpet Royal, a general student magazine published in the 1960s. A dissertation study of its history is also included in the collection. Privation stands out as a dominant theme in the mission's administrative correspondence and legal records, as well as in the financial records themselves. This collection may serve as a reminder that admirable perseverance and self-sacrifice, intitutional as well as personal, is also an element in the history of Indian missions. These sacramental records, however, continue uninterrupted through 1873 and so provide key genealogical data about the region's Indian population during that early period. The collection contains other useful genealogical resources for a later interval, such as school attendance records (1888-1930) and federal census results for the Flathead Reservation (1900-1949). Like many other Rocky Mountain Mission collections, this one also holds a pastoral census of Catholic families; unfortunately the compilation of this effort was not dated. The extensive series of financial records is another potential resource for biographical research, as well how these represent the central role the mission played in the region's economy. Frs. Prando and Bandini have left a useful eyewitness record of the turbulent circumstances on the Crow Reservation at the time the Jesuits established their residence there; similar materials are housed in their personal papers. Photographs depict individuals and groups as well as the mission buildings and grounds. School and sacramental records are lacking in this collection, which limits its use for genealogical research to the two census compilations of the 1910s. Edings (father-in-law of Thomas Grimke White). Papers of Thomas Grimke White include correspondence (1870-1916), legal records, a scrapbook memorializing his son Thomas G. White, Jr., and writings. White Sr.'s legal records include an argument (undated) regarding Woodlands Plantation, which was taken by the U.S. government in 1866 for a school farm; a petition (1887) concerning Woodlands Plantation; and a complaint (1892) against the U.S. treasury secretary and the first comptroller for dismissing legitimate claims made by dispossessed landowners of Beaufort County whose lands were sold off under the Direct Tax Act of 1862 and who were entitled to compensation according to later legislation. Writings of Thomas Grimke White, Jr., include speeches, essays, and a printed pamphlet entitled "Sea Island Lands: St. Helena Parish and Its Citizens," which concerns the sacking of Beaufort, South Carolina ("The most costly furniture was recklessly destroyed, or sold to the shopkeepers and shipped North, where even now some of it may be seen"), the direct tax, and the confiscation of lands in Beaufort County by the "true and fervent worshippers of the almighty dollar." Papers of Rev. John Chanler White include correspondence (1919-1955), a genealogy (1916) of the White family, and miscellaneous items. Much of the correspondence concerns family history, and includes letters to Rev. White from his cousins Julian and Maude Edings in Macon, Ga., and from Marion W. Seabrook in Sumter, S.C. Also among the White family papers is correspondence (1871-1873) of Ella Louise White, daughter of Thomas Grimke White, a student at the Ladies' Ursuline Community in Columbia, S.C. (also known as the Ursuline Institute), including letters to her from her father at Chappells (in Newberry County, S.C.), and a letter to her from Madame Mary Ursula. The history of the mission itself, from the Jesuits' first settlement attempts to their departure in 1898, is best represented in the series of outgoing status reports to the Jesuit General's Office in Rome. Researchers of local history and genealogy are also indebted to the Jesuit Archives in Rome (ARSI) for preserving the record of Fr. Point's initial missionary contact (1846-1847) with the Blackfeet. Subsequent sacramental records (1855-1895) have survived as well, with facsimiles in this collection and the originals housed at the Archives of the Catholic Diocese of Great Falls. School attendance records (1892-1894), another important genealogical resource, are to be found in the collection, but only as a snapshot during the mission's brief prosperity. The collection's few photographs tend to feature the mission buildings and grounds over the events and activities of its residents.
