Writing from New Orleans, La., Wadleigh comments on the contested 1876 presidential election in Louisiana, during which the Louisiana Returning Board threw out Democratic ballots in order to ensure a victory for Republican Rutherford B. Hayes. Wadleigh also describes a trip to a sugar plantation in Plaquemines Parish, a visit to Lake Pontchartrain over the shell road, and invitations from various social clubs in New Orleans.
