(21 v. and 1 unnumbered busta).MacFarlane notes that this is a fragment of the Farnese family archives, which were first established in Parma in the late sixteenth century and later transferred to Naples. This part of them came into the Vatican Archives in the late nineteenth century and consists of correspondence dealing with the diplomatic relations between the Holy See and other European powers in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The series begins in essence in 1545 within the pontificate of Paul III (1534-1549) who, before his elevation, had been Cardinal Alessandro Farnese. As would be expected, the whole collection is a mine of information on the Council of Trent and the period immediately following it. ItalianLatinBentley Historical LibraryVettori, Pietro, 1499-1585.
