The 4th Regiment of the South Carolina Volunteers was authorized for state service by the South Carolina General Assembly on December 17, 1860, and entered Confederate service on June 7, 1861. The 4th Regiment of the South Carolina Infantry was disbanded in April of 1862, much reduced by sickness. The regiment, stationed near Manassas Junction, Virginia between April 1861 and January 1862, participated in the First Battle of Bull Run. Col. J.B.E. Sloan commanded the unit, and Lt. Col. Charles S. Mattison briefly acted as commander.

Affidavit (1900) signed by J.H. Burdine and J.F. Clardy attests to John Wesley Burdine's enlistment in South Carolina. Pension application (1902) made at Choctaw County, Mississippi is for an "indigent widow of soldier or sailor of the late Confederacy" and is signed by Lucinda Burdine. Other items include a pass (1861) for J.W. Burdine, a parole certificate (1865), and a fragment (1 p.) of a war journal (1864) giving names and dates of battles and skirmishes. After the alphabetical listing, the ledger contains detailed information of each customer's account. Names are recorded at the top of the page, as well as the work the company has done and the amount it will cost. Jobs include putting in shelves, floor repair, shingling roofs, door hinging and replacement, and porch repair. Total costs range from $200 to $600. Names of recurrent customers include Charles A. Johnston (1806-1877), Bank of the Valley, Corporation of Leesburg, and the 4th South Carolina Infantry Regiment. Pages are legibly paginated. The front and back covers have names and figures written upon them. Towards the end of the book, several pages are ripped out. Dried flower petals are wedged between some pages. Entries during the period 1861-1864 include brief comments on DeSaussure's wartime activities as a surgeon with the 8th and 4th South Carolina Infantry regiments, C.S.A. Also included are poems and sayings that DeSaussure collected; recipes; remedies; lists of slaves, including one that shows family relationships among the slaves; notes on bequests of others to various activities of the Episcopal Church of which DeSaussure was a member; and cattle inventories.
