The collection documents the administration of the corpus of the trust and the charitable contributions made to the categories of recipients named in the Identure and Deed of Trust establishing The Duke Endowment. The records are arranged to reflect the responsibilities and operations of the trustees, officers, and divisions of The Endowment. Subject areas represented in the collection include: the history of foundations, hospital and child care demographics and other statistics, rural church buildings and activities, the construction of Duke University, and the life of James Buchanan Duke. The geographic focus is primarily North Carolina and South Carolina. Individuals represented in the collection include Horace Trumbauer, Watson Smith Rankin, Graham L. Davis, Frank W. Rounds, George Garland Allen, William R. Perkins, and Alexander H. Sands. Businesses include Olmstead Brothers and Duke Power Company.
