Genoveva : Trauerspiel in fünf Aufzügen, 1834, ca. 1879-1887.Raupach, Ernst Benjamin Salomo, 1784-1852.Genoveva : Trauerspiel in fünf Aufzügen, 1834, ca. 1879-1887.12 items.Materials related to rehearsal and performance, including a published copy (Hamburg: Hoffmann und Campe, 1834), which has been annotated as a prompt-book; a handwritten scenario; and 10 handwritten role books, for the following parts: Sigfried, Genoveva, Golo, Emma, Rischa, Drago, Guntram, Dietrich, Eudo, and Reno. (The play has a few additional characters that may have been omitted in performance.) The published copy is labeled as the property of Theodor Bloch, who was active in German-language theater in Philadelphia, first as an actor and later as a prompter, from the early 1870s until at least the mid 1890s, and who also ran a theater lending library. Names of actors and actresses noted on the covers of role books reflect two casts who performed the play in Philadelphia, the earlier one probably dating from around 1879 and the later one from around 1886-1887. Names of the later cast are also noted in the published copy next to the list of characters. (The collection's holdings of theater newspapers and playbills contain no reference to this play.) Müller, etc., etc. Pierpont Morgan Library.Raupach, Ernst Benjamin Salomo, 1784-1852. Der Platzregen als Eheprokurator : Eine dramatische Anecdote in zwei Aufzügen, ca. 1886-1896, n.d.Raupach, Ernst Benjamin Salomo, 1784-1852.Der Platzregen als Eheprokurator : Eine dramatische Anecdote in zwei Aufzügen, ca. 1886-1896, n.d.3 items.Materials related to rehearsal and performance, including a handwritten transcription of the text in a hard-covered notebook, annotated as a prompt-book; and 2 handwritten role books, for the parts of Commerzienräthin Zirbel and Guste, Köchin. (The play has 3 other roles: Hauptmann von Dürrfeld; David, Bedienter; and Köck, Soldat und Dürrfelds Bursche.) The role book for Guste bears the name of the actress Bertha Kost, and in the text two other names of cast members are noted on the page with the list of characters--Herr Paulson as Dürrfeld, and Fräulein Prinzhorn as Commerzienräthin Zirbel. At least the names of the two actresses are familiar from the casts of other German-language plays given in Philadelphia and might reflect a performance in the mid 1880s to mid 1890s. In the context of the Learned Collection, it is likely that the items belonged to Theodor Bloch, who ran a theater lending library in Philadelphia during that period; the title is listed in Bloch's catalog for his library, dated 1886 (see box 34).
