Includes files relating to Mulliken's work at the University of Chicago in the Division of the Physical Sciences, Department of Chemistry, Department of Physics, and the Laboratory of Molecular Structure and Spectra. Major correspondents include Enrico Clementi, C.A. Coulson, Paul A.D. De Maine, J. Duchesne, Humberto Fernandez Moran Villalobos, Gerhard Herzberg, Leona Marshall Libby, Per Olov Lowdin, Robert G. Parr, Willis B. Person, John Rader Platt, William Charles Price, and John Clarke Slater. University of Chicago LibraryKorff, Serge Alexander, 1906-. Papers, 1928-1989.Korff, Serge Alexander, 1906-New York University. Dept. of Physics.Joint Commission on High Altitude Research.Cosmic Ray Technical Panel.Papers, 1928-1989.12 linear feet. The Korff Collection documents the work of a prominent cosmic ray physicist active in academic, governmental and international settings. The collection contains 12 linear feet of material and encompasses Korff's professional career from 1928 to 1989, though the bulk of the material falls into the period 1950-1975. Correspondence represents a significant portion of the collection: correspondents include leading American, South American and European physicists, graduate students and post-doctoral fellows, academicians from other disciplines, professional scientific organizations, government agencies, military personnel, commercial equipment suppliers, and publishing concerns. Korff's notes and drafts demonstrate not only his research methods and prose style, but also his lectures and presentations, revisions of his own and other's publications, and the details of his experimental data. Also included in the collection are information on research projects and expeditions; grant proposals and reports; materials on scientific conferences; students' theses and dissertations; administrative records pertaining to NYU and its physics department; and reprints of scholarly articles by Korff and others. Korff additionally provides his personal insights and remarkable observations on his travels in his memoirs of his travels and of the NYU Physics Department. The Korff Collection provides critical insight into the field of physics in the 20th century. Significant topics represented include the study of cosmic rays, neutrons and optical dispersion; the theory, development and uses of devices for measuring radiation; radio-carbon dating; physics research and its social and political context around the world, especially in South America; international scientific cooperation, particularly during the International Geophysical Year; observations of eclipses; high altitude balloon flights; and government and military funding of scientific research. Condon Papers Circa 1920-197475.0 Linear feetEdward Uhler Condon was a theoretical physicist at Princeton University and Westinghouse Laboratories who later served as director of the National Bureau of Standards (1945-1951), and as the director of research and development (1951-1954) and consulting physicist (1954-1974) at Corning Glass Works. The Condon Papers includes correspondence, notebooks, writings, photographs, and other materials concerning Condon's education, teaching, and his government, industrial, and academic.American Philosophical SocietyJohn Archibald Wheeler Papers, 1880-2008, 1880-2008Wheeler, John Archibald, 1911-2008John Archibald Wheeler Papers, 1880-2008 1880-2008150.0 Linear feet, Ca. 17,000 itemsThere are correspondence, notebooks, reports, recordings, etc. of this award-winning physicist and pioneer theorist on the existence of black holes. A student of Karl Herzfeld at Johns Hopkins University, John Archibald Wheeler studied nuclear fission with Neils Bohr. The numerous volumes of research notebooks in the collection, Wheeler's daily record of calculations, meetings attended and conversations held about his work, are of primary significance. Among other subjects, they cover physics, nucleonics, quantum electrodynamics, and relativity. The correspondence in the collection contains many personal evaluations of scientists (subject to restrictions on use), as well as Wheeler's contributions to promoting physics and scientific education and training in general. There are important series relating to his participation in the 1950s on the Committee on Scientific and Technical Personnel of NATO, headed by Senator Henry M. Jackson, and his organizational work on the Joint Committee of the American Physical Society and the American Philosophical Society on the History of Theoretical Physics in the Twentieth Century.American Philosophical SocietyMulliken, Robert S. Papers, 1908-1985Mulliken, Robert S. Papers 1908-1985The papers of Robert S. Mulliken, comprising 63 linear feet, document most aspects of his long and successful career in the field of chemical physics from the 1920s through 1985. They include correspondence, lectures and writings, research and teaching materials, and files from his affiliations at the University of Chicago and with other scientific organizations.EnglishSpecial Collections Research Center, University of Chicago Library,
