Tate,Additional papers of Campbell Bascom Slemp, 1907-1932.ca. 35,500 items.Discovered on property formerly belonging to C. Bascom Slemp, this collection consists mainly of Slemp's personal and political papers covering the years 1907-1932. Combined with papers from MSS 9507, the collections reveals much about Slemp's day-to-day activities and gives a good picture of Southwestern Virginia and statewide Virginia politics in the first quarter of the Twentieth Century. Correspondence topics include postal patronage, military pensions and discharges, and West Point and U.S. Naval Academy appointments. Account sheets from W.L. Lyons & Co. and William Morris Agency, Inc. give some indication of Slemp's stock market dealings. There is also a listing of legal cases on which Slemp worked as counsel, legal briefs, political lists, bills, and resolutions. Prominent correspondents include Joseph P. Brady, A.P. Crockett, R.O. Crockett, Joe L. Crupper, R.A. Fulwiler, George L. Hart, L.P. Summers, Jennings C. Wise, John G. Pollard, L.N. Buford, and R.T. Irvine (likely Slemp's personal attorney in Big Stone Gap, Va.). There is also considerable family correspondence which provides insight into Slemps' role as "titular head" of a far-flung family. University of Virginia. LibrarySlemp, C.
