The collection is divided into four series. Series I contains correspondence relating to a wide variety of topics, including French and English politics, business, trade, religious matters, and personal affairs. Many of the items are letters of introduction. There is also information on John Vaughan’s immigration to America, Joseph Priestley, vaccines and inoculation (with Jefferson's comments on the same), Vaughan's business in Philadelphia, and the American Philosophical Society. Also included in this series are 2 boxes with copies of Vaughan correspondence as well as miscellaneous notes by E. W. Madeira, gathered in the course of his research on Vaughan in the 1930s. Series II consists of three volumes. Included are two of Vaughan's commonplace books. One, entitled, "J. Vaughan's book," May 17, 1779 (47 pp., in Latin; 870/L34), includes mostly Latin notations. The other commonplace book, dated 1783 (ca. 66 pp.; B V 462.c), includes comments on several prominent Americans, such as Benjamin Rush and David Rittenhouse, as well as American society generally. The third volume is a copybook with thirty letters spanning the period 1784 to 1801 (B V462.1). It includes a copy (in English) of Sahune's declaration of the authenticity of the various Lafayette/American Revolution relics in his possession; a declaration by Sahune's London solicitor, W. Sanders Fiske, describing the Franklin cane; a copy of the description of the cane from the French government auction catalogue; a letter from Pepper to Charles C. Harrison, Provost of the University of Pennsylvania, stating his intention to present the cane to the University; and a reply to Pepper. The Cope & Stewardson Collection comprises architectural drawings and photomechanical prints documenting buildings and projects of Cope & Stewardson and its successor firm Stewardson and Page. The most numerous drawings are construction drawings, but the collection includes fine examples of design and presentation drawings. Among these is a presentation drawing of the Quadrangle Dormitories, ca. 1894, signed by Charles Z. Klauder. The collection does not contain any photographs, specifications or correspondence, nor is there any documentation for the teaching activities or personal lives of any members of the firms. The fullest holdings in this collection are drawings for buildings on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania. The collection includes documentation for some later alterations and additions to buildings designed by Cope & and Stewardson and Stewardson and Page for the University of Pennsylvania. Most important are drawings (1946) for Robert Rodes McGoodwin's addition to the North Wing of the Veterinary Medicine Old Quadrangle and drawings (1953-1958) for Trautwein and Howard's final section of the Quadrangle Dormitories. The collection does not include any drawings for buildings on any other college or university campus. Other projects represented in the collection include hospitals, commercial buildings and houses. Samuel Sloan's design for Episcopal Hospital, Philadelphia, is documented in a set of 1926 Stewardson and Page survey drawings of existing buildings. Also noteworthy are two Philadelphia commercial buildings designed by Cope & Stewardson in 1893 for Charles Custis Harrison, who later became provost of the University of Pennsylvania. The Charles Custis Harrison records of the Office of the Provost document his activities as Provost of the University of Pennsylvania and as Vice President and President of the Board of Directors of the University Museum. This collection though part of the Office of the Provost Records, includes material from almost all aspects of Harrison's career with the University of Pennsylvania. It will aid research in the history of the University Museum, University fundraising, and the development of the university in the United States. The Charles Custis Harrison records contain outgoing correspondence from his years as Provost of the University of Pennsylvania (1894-1911). The correspondence relates to his job duties as Provost: budgetary, program development, building construction, and faculty hiring. Frequent correspondents include William Draper Lewis, Edward W. Mumford, Charles H. Frazier, J. Hartley Merrick, Josiah Harmar Penniman, and William Otto Miller. There is a collection of letters sent to him from a variety of leaders in the field of education, philanthropy and the University on the occasion of his retirement. The collection also includes correspondence concerning the formative years of the University Museum of Archæology and Anthropology and its academic arm - the Department of Archæology and Palæology. There are copies of the minutes of the Board of Managers of the Museum as well as correspondence with key figures, such as Sara Y. Stevenson, Clarence H. Clark, E.W. Clark, John Henry Haynes, H.V. Hilprecht, Morris Jastrow, Jr. Typescript copies of the Museum's first excavation project at Nippur in present day Iraq complement the correspondence. In addition to these early records, the collection contains correspondence about the museum's management and collections in the 1920s during Harrison's final years as President of the Board of Managers. Information on Harrison and his family can be found in the personal and family papers series. It includes newspaper clippings and some correspondence concerning the business career of Charles Custis as well as some of the family's interest in the arts, such as his purchase of "Breaking Home Ties" by Thomas Hovenden (and includes a photograph of the artist painting the picture).
