Diplomatic papers of graf von Harrach, [1670s?].Harrach, Ferdinand Bonaventura, graf von, 1636-1706.Diplomatic papers of graf von Harrach, [1670s?].4.5 linear ft. (27 v.)The papers contain copies of treaties, pacts, negotiation minutes, and other diplomatic agreements; copies of orders and instructions, secret instructions, credentials, memoranda, reports, and correspondence; and copies of newsletters, accounts of current events, and historical background material, all documenting diplomatic, political and military affairs in Europe from the point of view of the Hapsburg emperors between ca. 1600 and 1675. In addition to extensive information concerning the close, if sometimes strained, diplomatic and political connections between the Empire and the Hapsburg rulers of Spain, there is much documentation concerning the diplomatic and military events and confused aftermaths of the Thirty Years' War. Several volumes cover the imperial response to the almost continuous challenges to Hapsburg rule in the Spanish Netherlands and Low Countries; Catalonia and Portugal; the Kingdom of Naples; Hungary; and the Balkans. The multitude of imperial efforts to manage and counter the domination of the Ottoman Empire in the Balkans and Eastern Mediterranean is particularly well traced, including repeated interventions in Poland's elective monarchy; the wars in Hungary and Transylvania; the Venetian response to the Turks; and the arrival of a Turkish ambassador in Vienna. In addition, alliances and conflicts among the smaller German states and principalities, and the Hapsburg role in them, are well represented. Also included are documents tracing the Holy Roman Empire's deteriorating relations with France, especially during the Franco-Spanish War. Background information on France is located in Volume 18 and includes historical reports on relations between France and Turkey, the life of Cardinal Mazarin, copies of correspondence between the French and imperial courts, and papers concerning the conduct of French ambassadors in Vienna. The volumes also hold copies of much correspondence concerning the ultimately unsuccessful imperial negotiations with the member states of the Triple Alliance (England, Holland and Sweden), particularly the English discussions of the baron de Lisola (Volume 5). Volume 17 contains historical material on relations with England, Sweden and Denmark, and includes reports on the execution of Charles I, the rule of Oliver Cromwell, a description of the 1666 fire of London, and translations and copies of four letters by Peter Paul Rubens discussing his diplomatic activity in London in the 1620s.
