Milton.Runyon, Laura.Weaver, Harriet Shaw.Papers of Stuart Gilbert, 1900-1985 (bulk 1928-1975).18 boxes (7.5 linear feet). The Stuart Gilbert papers embrace correspondence, diaries, notebooks, clippings, photographs, and other material documenting Gilbert's literary career, particularly his work with James Joyce and as a literary translator. Series I of the Gilbert papers comprise the correspondence, diaries, notebooks, and other materials of Stuart Gilbert. The series covers the years 1900 to 1969, with the majority dating between 1940 and 1969. The correspondence and other papers are essentially professional in character; correspondents include Sylvia Beach, Peter Du Sautoy, T. S. Eliot, Richard Ellmann, Desmond Harmsworth, Ben Huebsch, Patricia Hutchins, André Malraux, Roger Martin du Gard, and Harriet Weaver. Gilbert's diaries, which span the years 1929 to 1967, and his numerous notebooks give insight into his assistance to and collaboration with James Joyce. His translation work and original writing is only sketchily represented. Series II, the correspondence, notebooks, and other materials of Moune Gilbert, reflects the social interests and daily activities of Stuart Gilbert's wife. As in the first series, little dates from before 1940. Correspondents inlcude James and Christiane Emmons, Milton and Laura Runyon, Narcissa S. King, and Anie Parent. The notebooks contain excerpts from French authors and abstracts of books read; a late interview contains Moune's description of her husband's relationship with James Joyce. Series III includes correspondence of James Joyce, along with a draft chapter of Finnegans Wake, some verse, photographs, and a collection of critical material on his novels. About seventy postcards and letters Joyce sent the Gilberts are included, as are others from Nora, George, and Lucia Joyce. Some of the other correspondents represented in the approximately 500 letters gathered here are: Cecil Beaton, Jane Bowles, Ivy Compton-Burnett, Lawrence Durrell, T.S. Eliot, Martha Gellhorn, Victoria Glendinning, Brian Howard, Peter Quennell, and Sacheverell Sitwell, among others. Also present are letters and contracts with the London literary agency David Higham Associates, Ltd., relating to Harper's contributions to a book project on her friend Edith Sitwell. There are also several folders of unidentified correspondence, which have either incomplete names or indecipherable signatures. Harper's manuscript of her autobiography All Trivial Fond Records is present, along with some manuscripts and notes for a few short works. Series II, Sybille Bedford, is comprised primarily of incoming correspondence to Sybille Bedford, but also contains some outgoing correspondence, and two manuscripts relating to the work of Aldous Huxley. Her outgoing correspondence is primarily to her longtime friend, Eda Lord, during the 1970s. Incoming correspondence from Anna Bernhardt, Bedford's maternal grandmother, is extensive, numbering 168 letters (40 in German) and dates from 1933-1937. (Harley K.),Papers of James Joyce from the Harley K. Croessmann Collection, 1901-1959.5.80 cu. ft.The Croessmann Collection of James Joyce, assembled by Dr. Harley K. Croessmann, contains correspondence by and about Joyce and many manuscripts, notes, galley proofs, photographs, pictorial representations, sculpture, and ephemera, by Joyce and his friends, biographers, and critics. The collection is divided into four parts: the Herbert Gorman Papers, the Georg Goyert Papers, other Croessmann acquisitions, and Dr. Croessman's personal correspondence. The Herbert Gorman Papers contain materials relating to Gorman's 1924 biography of Joyce, including 330 original and transcribed letters, notes, drafts, typescripts, galley proofs, and manuscripts by Joyce and others. The correspondence consists of letters Gorman received from Joyce and others and transcriptions of Joyce letters for the biography. There are thirty letters and cards, dated 1925-1938, from Joyce to Gorman (and his wife), discussing corrections for the biography and for Joyce's manuscript "Sullivan." In addition, the correspondence contains letters from some of Joyce's friends and acquaintances, who helped Gorman by providing their recollections of Joyce and details about Dublin. These correspondents include: Alf Bergan, Harriet Weaver, T.S. Eliot, Arthur Symons, Oliver St. John Gogarty, Stanislaus Joyce, Eugene Jolas, James S. Starkey (Seumas O'Sullivan), and Padraic Colum. Many of the 150 transcriptions of Joyce letters were provided by Joyce's brother Stanislaus Joyce, and include letters from Joyce to his mother, his wife, and to Stanislaus. Though the originals of the Joyce-Stanislaus Joyce correspondence are housed in the Cornell Joyce Collection, some of the originals did not survive, making these transcriptions the only record of the contents of the missing letters. There are other transcribed letters, including some from John Quinn to Ezra Pound and Margaret Anderson about the Little Review--Ulysses obscenity proceedings. The collection contains valuable notes that Herbert Gorman took while reading Joyce's Paris Notebook (1902-1904), the original of which has not been found. The notes record Joyce's notes for Stephen Hero and Dubliners, as well as the author's aesthetic theories, among other material. Joyce's schema for Ulysses is here as are drafts of "From a Banned Writer to a Banned Singer" (originally titled "Sullivan") and "Epilogue to Ibsen's 'Ghosts'." The typescripts and galley proofs of Gorman's biography have autograph corrections by Gorman and suggested corrections by Joyce (in Paul Leon's hand). Toklas," "The Making of Americans" (complete with a quantity of notes, or "studies"), "Tender Buttons" and a group of unpublished fragments and carnets, notebooks kept by Stein with preliminary drafts of writings. Series II, Correspondence of Gertrude Stein, contains letters sent from a wide variety of Stein's friends: artists such as Georges Bracque, Jean Cocteau, and Pablo Picasso; writers such as Sherwood Anderson, Ernest Hemingway, and Thornton Wilder; and acquaintances through many years such as Mildred Aldrich, Etta and Claribel Cone, Robert Haas, Mabel Dodge Luhan,Sir Francis Rose, Virgil Thomson, and Carl Van Vechten. Series III, Third Party Letters and Series IV, Alice B. Toklas Correspondence, contain letters from many of the same people, the latter group containing Alice Toklas's correspondence following Gertrude Stein's death. Series V, Personal Papers, and Series VI, Clippings, gather together various personal affects of Stein and Toklas as well as documentation of Stein's life as reported during her lifetime. Series VII, Photographs, show Stein from early childhood through 1946, the year she died. Paul Bowles letter to c[harles] h[enri] f[ord] [manuscript], 1978 October.Bowles, Paul, 1910-1999.Ford, Charles Henri,Paul Bowles letter to c[harles] h[enri] f[ord] [manuscript], 1978 October.1 item.Bowles reminisces about the year 1929, stating the months before the stock market crash were "ordinary enough." He notes that at the University of Virginia where he was studying "the more literary students quoted The Waste Land to each other" and "one of the fraternities took the radical step of hiring McKinney's Cotton-Pickers to play at its prom. This move was criticized by the students who objected to the idea of dancing to music made by blacks." He relates that after he dropped out of college and went to Paris his parents "were visited by a professor and his sadistic wife" who showed them a copy of "The sun also rises" about the expatriate life, after which his parents refused to support him. He describes his life in Paris as "being in a state of desperate euphoria which precluded rational thought" and mentions that he earned $8-$10 a week, listened to Cole Porter songs and attended the Russian opera and the Diaghilev Ballet. He relates an incident about Tristan Tzara and his killer Siamese cat. He describes the atmosphere in Nice where he sat in cafes in the sun, drank cafe au lait and wrote his first poems about villages in the Basses Alpes which Ford published in "Blues." Bowles concludes with his acqusition of the all the small format issues of Transition and the last two issues of Ethel Moorehead's This Quarter purchased at Sylvia Beach's but the books published by Contact and Black Sun were too expensive. After returning to New York he found Transition #13, and had tea with Carl Van Vechten who autographed 6 books for him. He also attended a New Masses ball and ended the year in a alcoholic fog in the Village. University of Virginia. LibraryFodder, Paul K. Manuscript material received with the Paul K.
