Correspondence of these Virginia families related by the marriages of Col. Thomas L. Preston and Anna Maria Saunders and the Rev. Richard T. Davis and Louisa M. Saunders, daughters of Gen. Fleming Saunders, of Franklin County, Va. The wide range of correspondence includes letters of the related Blackford, Early, Hampton (South Carolina), McDowell, Minor, and Watts families; as well from Richard K. Cralle, Jubal Early, Wade Hampton, and John B. Minor. The collection in general regards the business and Civil War careers of Colonel Preston and the Rev. Davis' ministerial work and his tenure as Chaplain of the Sixth Virginia Cavalry Regiment life and personalities of Charlottesville and the University of Virginia; social and economic conditions in Virginia, 1850-1880, and family affairs. Of interest is a letter, 1853 November 24, concerning a "row" between the citizens and students at the Town Hall in which the latter disturbed the performance of a ventriloquist , and J. E. D'Alfonce saved several ladies by throwing them on the stage from which they could escape into a garden, after which the students were marched back to the grounds by the militia and later broke into a temperance supper. Another letter, 1854 February 9, also notes a "row" in which students tore down gutters, palings and front steps at various residences. Also of interest are two letters, 1854 January 26 and 1859 July 8, concerning religious instruction of slaves, a more worthy endeavor than foreign missions and one which should be performed by Virginians and not northerners. The collection also contains the diploma of Caroline P. Davis the first woman to be granted a diploma from the University of Virginia; an autograph of Gen. Robert E. Lee; and a safe conduct pass signed by Mahomet Ali.
