The papers include correspondence, orders, completed forms, memoranda, announcements and circulars for Totten's World War I, World War II, and army reserve service, along with information about the University military science curriculum and the Carolina Volunteer Training Program. During his long association with botanist William C. Coker, Totten became interested in the development of Coker's Chapel Hill, N.C., property. He eventually took over management of the sale of this land and joined the Chapel Hill Board of Realtors. There are detailed accounts of real estate transactions, correspondence concerning all phases of the development of the property, and surveys, land plats, and maps. Totten's University of North Carolina papers include correspondence, reports, mimeographed notices, memoranda, minutes, diagrams and plans, financial records, and publications related to his work in the Botany Department as a teacher, administrator, director of the arboretum and botanical gardens, his association with the Highlands (N.C.) Biological Station, and his co-authorship of "Trees of the Southeastern States," Trees of the Mountains," and Vascular Flora of the Carolinas." Also included are reports on three of Totten's botanical projects, including a drug garden, propagation of mentha citrata, and mushroom culture, and a number of botanical photographs.

Correspondence and other materials of Totten reflecting her interests and activities in gardening. Much correspondence is with members of garden clubs both in North Carolina and in other states, with garden club federation offcials, and with flower show judges and members of judging societies. Especially prominent among corrspondents are those representing the Garden Club of North Carolina, Inc., and the National Council of State Garden Clubs, Inc. Most letters relate to flower and garden research, garden club organization and structure, organizing and judging flower shows, and other garden and flower topics. Also included are papers and notes from classes Totten took at the University of North Carolina in the 1930s; clippings, 1930s-1970s, relating to garden clubs in North Carolina and other parts of the country and to the National Council of State Garden Clubs, Inc.; Totten's speeches and writings, 1930s-1970s, chiefly on gardening topics; and appointment, travel, and address books with largely nonsubstantive entries, 1918-1919 and 1934-1958. There are also two photographs of Totten and a few items relating to her husband, Henry Roland Totten (1892-1974), professor of botany at UNC.

Also included are scattered letters dealing with local and family history; reprints of articles by Melvin; photocopies of nine letters, 1953-1957 and 1967, from Immanuel Velikovsky (1895- ), Princeton, N.J., to Melvin about their shared interests in the formation of the Carolina bays; and photocopies of letters, 1969, from Frank Porter Graham (1886- ) to Melvin about family history.
