Gordon Lester Ford (1823-1891) was a businessman, lawyer and collector of Americana. He practiced law for much of his life but his main interests were business and real estate investment. He was president of the New London, Willimantic & Palmer Railroad from 1852 to 1856 and director or investor in several other railroads. He also served as U.S. Marshall in southern New York, collector of internal revenue for the third collection district, commissioner of deeds, and business manager of the New York Tribune. In 1863 he helped to found the Brooklyn Daily Union, a newspaper devoted to supporting the Union cause during the Civil War. He also was a founder of the Brooklyn Academy of Music and of the Brooklyn Art Association. He collected books and manuscripts and assembled what was regarded as one of the largest private collections of Americana.
Lawyer, collector; New York City.
Treasurer of Brooklyn Art Association, 1862-1891, which later became the Brooklyn Academy of Music. At the time of his death, Ford possesed the most valuable private library collection in the U.S., which his sons donated to the New York Public library.
Brooklyn residents Gordon L. Ford (1823-1891), Samuel S. Powell, and Henry A. Washburn worked as a lawyer, a clothier, and an engineer, respectively.
The Brooklyn Academy of Music, one of Brooklyn's premier centers for the performing arts, was founded in 1859 and officially opened in 1861 on Montague Street. After its building was destroyed by a fire in 1903, the Academy moved to a facility on Lafayette Avenue in the neighborhood of Fort Greene, which opened in 1908. In 1936, facing depleted financial resources, the Academy became part of the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences, with which it remained until the 1970s, when it again became an independent organization.

Gordon Lester Ford papers 1830-1910 1850-1869
The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence, legal and business papers and account books. General correspondence, 1842-1893, which includes in-coming letters and drafts and letterbooks of out-going letters, reflects Ford's activities as a lawyer and businessman, his real estate and railroad investments, his government service, and his autograph collecting. Family correspondence, 1830-1910, contains Ford's correspondence with his parents, wife (Emily Ellsworth Ford), brothers and sisters, children, and various members of his mother's family, the Burnhams. Legal papers, 1837-1893, include case records, letterbook, law diaries, and law ledgers. Business papers, 1839-1891, include insurance papers, accounts, bills and receipts, promissory notes, and indentures. Account books, 1844-1892, consist of ledgers reflecting Ford's legal and business transactions and accounts with various people including family members. There are also papers, 1863-1871, concerning his internal revenue position and the Brooklyn Daily Union, in addition to miscellaneous papers which include membership certificates, invitations, calling cards, and printed ephemera.

Ford family papers, 1833-1910
Title:
Ford family papers 1833-1910
Ford family members in this collection are all related to Gordon Lester Ford (1823-1891), businessman, lawyer and collector of Americana. They include his father, Lester Ford (1798-1888) of Lebanon, Conn.; his mother, Eliza Burnham Ford (d. 1834); his stepmother, Lucy Burnham Ford (cousin of Eliza); and Eliza's brother Gordon Burnham (1803-1885); Gordon Ford's siblings, Marcia, Eliza (d. ca. 1886), William, and Henry B. Ford; and four of his children, Kathleen Ford Turle (b. 1856), Rosalie Ford Barr (b. 1859), Mabel Ford Mayo-Smith (b. 1863), and Malcolm Webster Ford (1862-1902), an amateur athlete in the 1880s. Members of the Fowler family of New England and the Chauncey family of Connecticut were related to the Fords. Collection consists of the papers of various members of Gordon Ford's family. Ford correspondence, 1833-1910, contains family letters and some letters of a general nature. Burnham correspondence, 1834-1864, includes letters of Gordon Burnham and Annie McClane Farrer, who was a Burnham relative. Fowler family correspondence, 1818-1870, consists chiefly of letters to and from William Chauncey Fowler and his wife Harriet W. Fowler. Chauncey papers, 1744-1857, include correspondence, deeds, legal records, and other materials. General and unidentified correspondence, 1833-1906, contains letters whose sender or receiver cannot be determined, and letters of individuals who are apparently unrelated to the Ford family. Personal and family papers include juvenalia, school records and memoranda of activities of Malcolm Ford and his sisters. Notes and memoranda consist of ephemera, either not of a personal nature or only indirectly concerned with the Fords. Unidentified papers are short writings and documents; printed matter includes clippings and other materials. Prints consist of items, such as pictures of notable Americans, views and buildings. Other materials include maps, photographs, diaries, ledgers, letterbooks, and related items.
