This collection contains Staples' correspondence and papers, 1849-1900, and includes notes referring to speaking engagements at temperance meetings, the ordering of books for Staples' private music library, and the securing of performers for the annual Worcester Music Festival. There are letters from George Frederick Root (1820-1895) and John Wingate Thornton (1818-1878) concerning old books, and detailed correspondence from Captain Horace James (1818-1875) from New Bern, North Carolina during the Civil War. James had resigned as minister of the Old South Church in Worcester (of which Staples was a leading member) and his letters contain references to upheavals in that church and to his duties as a chaplain in a black regiment, his work against the contraband trade, and later references to James' appointment as Assistant Quartermaster and Superintendent of Negro Affairs. The collection also contains a letter from U.S. Congressman John Denison Baldwin (1809-1883) critical of the presidency of Andrew Johnson (1808-1875) and reporting the beginning of a movement to impeach him. There are also several miscellaneous items, c. 1794, which apparently had belonged in the Staples family.
