The annual reports function to document the activities of the department over the year. Among the subjects discussed in these reports are: economic value and the protection of wildlife; research into wildlife and wildlife habitat; educational and informational activities conducted by the department; the enforcement of laws related to hunting game, fishing, and field trials for dogs; the licensing of hunting and limits to the hunting season; land purchases made; and specific wildlife such as bear, deer, quail, turkey, squirrel, and many others. Also discussed are air and water pollution, seafood, restocking streams, rivers, and lakes with fish, and controlling forest fires. From 1939 the control of the state's school lands and the Civilian Conservation Corps' camps were included in the working of the department, with the latter leading to the state park system now in place in Alabama. From the 1930s the agency's cooperation with the US Forestry Service and TVA were discussed in detail. Also of note are the reports of the county (and later district) game wardens regarding the proliferation of wildlife and protection against forest fires. Statistics regarding the numbers of convictions and the issuance of hunting licenses are given by county as well. Financial information is given for both the state and county levels regarding receipts and disbursements. Of special interest is a wildlife map of Alabama in the FY1936 annual report. These annual reports also contain various types of maps and charts, such as the 1941 map of lookout towers in Alabama, and the charts in the 1946 annual report of receipts and expenditures for 1945. In the 1980s organizational charts began to appear. The first report is actually a double biennial report that covers the years 1908-1910 and 1910-1912. The first biennial report published, 1907-1908, is not present in the collection. Biennial reports were issued from 1906-1918, quadrennial reports were issued from 1918-1934, and from 1934 forward annual reports were issued. There is not a 1988 annual report. Information discussed in these publications include animal species, Arbor Day, bird species, boating, coastal fisheries resources, conservation of natural resources, conservation law, endangered species, fishing, fire ant eradication, forest fire protection, flower species, forestry and forestry management, hunting, land management, marine resources, oysters, pesticides, rivers, shrimp, varieties of native trees, and water safety.
