Report (two copies), including eight photographs, of an archaeological exploration, July-Dec. 1971, of Fort Mitchell, Ala. The fort was built in 1811 near the Federal Road and was an important U.S. fort during clashes with the Creek Indians. It is located in Russell County. The report discusses the geographical location of the fort, written records of the fort, various aspects, including features and ruins, artifacts and their interpretation, roads and trails, and reconstruction of the fort. Of special interest is the gravesite of John Crowell, Indian agent, and others. Structures are discussed in detail, as are the discovery and interpretation of artifacts.

Title: Crowell-Sparks Controversy, 1892?

Letter from "M.E.W." to the editor of the "Times" (place unknown). The writer was a niece of Col. John Crowell (1780-1846), a Creek Indian agent in Georgia and Alabama, 1821-1836, whose removal was demanded by the governor of Georgia. The letter defends Crowell against charges made against him at the time of the events and then later by historians, particularly Jared Sparks.

This photocopy of the journal includes licenses and articles of agreement pertaining to Crowell's work with the Indians. The articles of agreement with the Creek Nation state that named individuals of color are free from bondage and slavery.
