Elizabeth Fuller Chapman papers and films, 1932-1976
Title:
Elizabeth Fuller Chapman papers and films 1932-1976
The papers and films document the friendships between Elizabeth Fuller Chapman (1893-1980) and several writers and artists, most notably Alice B. Toklas, Gertrude Stein and Thornton Wilder. Letters in Box 1 date from 1932-1976. Printed material in Box 1 includes theater programs, clippings on Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas, and interview notes and transcripts from the filming of the 1970 documentary by Perry Miller Adato, "Gertrude Stein: When You See, Remember Me." The films in Box 2 are three reels of black and white 16mm motion picture film, duplicates made in 1982 of the original 16mm footage. One film, titled "Winter Parties," contains footage of parties at Chapman's home in Chicago between 1934 and 1935, and includes a scene from a 1934 holiday party with Gertrude Stein, Alice B. Toklas, and Thornton Wilder. The other two films, titled "Lectures," were made by Chapman during trips to Paris between 1934 and 1938. The films were used during Chapman's lectures. Scenes feature notable artists, writers, dancers, philosophers, and gallerists, including: Pedro Pruna, Constantin Brancusi, Gertrude Stein, Alice B. Toklas, Pablo Picasso, Colette, Thornton Wilder, Henri Matisse, Georges Braque, Marcel Duchamp, Igor Stravinsky, Nicolas Nabokov, Francis Poulenc, Salvador and Gala Dali, André Derain, Chick Austin, Christian Berard, Leonide Massine, Bernard Faÿ, Mary Garden, Louis Marcoussis, and Edouard Vuillard.

Foster, John Quinn, William Butler Yeats and others, from artists, art dealers, writers, editors, poets, musicians, and scholars. Title:
Valentine Hugo Papers, 1872-1968.
Correspondence, manuscripts, notes, journals, diaries, artwork, legal, financial and personal documents, photographs, printed material, and photocopies document the life of Valentine Hugo from 1872-1968. Included in the Works series are a number of drafts of articles and notes relating to friends of Valentine Hugo such as Constantin Brancusi, Paul Éluard, Raymond Radiguet, and Erik Satie. Also present are a number of manuscripts for radio broadcasts written in the 1950s and 1960s about her early artistic career and acquaintances. Correspondence with Valentine's mother Zélie Gross comprises almost two thirds of the Letters series and a substantial portion of the Recipient series. Other notable correspondents in the Recipient series include Marie Laure, Romola Nijinsky, and André de Badet. Most of the materials in the Other Papers series are Valentine's own personal papers, such as her passport and birth certificate, and works or correspondence by other authors. A large part of materials in this series involve Jean Hugo, Valentine's husband, and legal documents, personal documents, and works by Valentine's mother, Zélie Gross, or father, Auguste Gross.

John Quinn papers, 1901-1926
Title:
John Quinn papers 1901-1926
John Quinn (1870-1924) was a corporation lawyer in New York City who amassed an important private collection of paintings, drawings and sculpture as well as books and manuscripts of contemporary authors. In addition to promoting modern and avant-garde art in all forms, he particularly encouraged the work of members of the Irish Literary Revival, the artists of the Paris School, and English and American writers of his time. In 1923 he sold his manuscript and library holdings to subsidize his art collection. Collection consists mainly of correspondence, with writings, printed matter and photographs that document Quinn's artistic and political interests. Correspondence, 1901-1924, is with artists, art dealers, critics, poets, playwrights, booksellers, publishers, and members of his family. Files of letters and letterbooks contain correspondence relating to his interest in the artistic and literary scene in America and abroad, events in Ireland especially during the Home Rule movement, his purchase of paintings, sculpture, first editions and manuscripts of contemporary literature, and the sale of his library and manuscript collection. Also includes typescripts of literary works, typescript of the catalog of Quinn's art collection, ledgers, sales and exhibition catalogs, periodicals, and photographs of Quinn with individual artists and group portraits.
