Captain Freystätter correspondence concerning the Dreyfus Affair, 1899-1902, n.d.
Title:
Captain Freystätter correspondence concerning the Dreyfus Affair, 1899-1902, n.d.
A small collection of letters, telegrams, and postcards sent to Captain Martin Freystätter and his wife, during and after the retrial of Alfred Dreyfus at Rennes in 1899. Freystätter's deposition at the Rennes trial caused a public outcry. Most of the missives convey admiration and support for Freystätter; a few messages are reproachs from his detractors. Many of the correspondents were in the military and state their company and regiment. Other correspondents include Senator Joseph Fabre, Yves Guyot (political editor of the newspaper Le Siècle), and Pierre-Victor Stock (publisher of numerous books and pamphlets about the Dreyfus Affair). In his memoir about the Dreyfus Affair, Stock writes that he was introduced to Freystätter by the artist M. Pierre Fritel. Before the end of the trial at Rennes, Freystätter left for Rochefort, and Stock promised to send him a telegram with news of the verdict. The telegram is among the items in this collection.
