This collection contains random gatherings of the papers of the Ashhurst and related families of Philadelphia. The most complete series consists of John Ashhurst personal receipted bills, 1837-1883, and caretaker of Samuel H. Hibbard's accounts, 1863-1877, of the Grange, Ashhurst's summer estate in Havertown, Pa. Also John Ashhurst correspondence, 1834-1892 which includes some family letters, often referring to estate and financial matters, and some personal business letters and papers. Other family members represented are: [I. I.] Wheeler ? Richard Ashhurst, dry goods merchant, letterbook, 1822-1827; Richard Ashhurst ? Richard L. Ashhurst letters (typescript), September, 1862 - June, 1863, as Adjutant of the 150th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers; Manuel Eyre estate papers, and assorted Stokes family correspondence, most notably Caleb P. Wayne's off again, on again courtship of Mary Stokes, 1802-1803.

Title: Estate papers, 1699-1858.

This collection contains the papers of John Ashhurst's estate. Most of the papers, primarily correspondence and receipts, pertain to the business interests of Manuel Eyre and Manuel Eyre, Jr., Philadelphia merchants. The papers supply information on commodity prices, insurance rates, and real estate, biographical sketches of friends and testimonials from various meetings, 1699-1763, information on property valuation for various Wards of Philadelphia, and lecture notes of John Ashhurst (son), 1855, later a noted physician, are included among these papers.

Title: Papers, 1806-1862.

Consists of bills, receipts, and letters relating to personal and business purchases made by members of the Ashhurst family, including Richard Ashhurst (1784-1861), John Ashhurst (1809-1892), William Ashhurst, and representatives of Richard Ashhurst & Sons. Featured are carpets bought from William Lapsley; a diamond chain and silver pin from Anthony Rasch; printed muslims, cambric, and handkerchiefs from John Hewson, silver from Fletcher & Gardiner, a lamp from Thomas Fletcher, and hanging lamps from John Leadbeater & Sons. In addition, such items as corsets, painted fans, shoes, boots, hats, tea trays, and candles are mentioned. Accounts with dressmakers and tailors are also included. The letters to Richard Ashhurst & Sons mostly concern the market for textile fabrics.

Morris, Morris, Tasker ? receipt of Frederick Schinckle to Frederick Graff (1807) for repairs to pump in yard of Market Street house in Philadelphia; note of Charles C. Cargill at Conowingo Furnace for $100 (1834).
