An extensive collection of letters from Gilbert Shelton, William Helmer, the Rip Off Press and others is included. Continuities by Harvey Pekar for which Stack prepared art work are in the collection. Includes newspaper articles about Stack, reproductions and reviews of Stack's comic art work, correspondence with associates, a list of syndicate proofs available for The Case of Dr. Feelgood and Dorman's doggie, etc.

Martin, Edgar Everett, 1898-1960. The Edgar E. Martin collection II : papers, 1935-[ongoing].

Title: The Edgar E. Martin collection II : papers, 1935-[ongoing].

Includes material related to Martin and his comic strip Boots and her buddies that have been added since the Martin I collection was placed on deposit in 1991 and 1992. Material from a 1992 Boots and her buddies exhibit in Ellis Library are in the collection. In conjunction with the exhibit, a catalog, Boots and her buddies, was prepared, the text of which was written by Thomas Harris. Copies of the catalog and issues of Cartoonist profiles in which it was reprinted are in the collection. Clipped daily and Sunday Boots comic strips have been purchased and received as gifts. Many years of Boots and her buddies have been copied from microfilm.

Contains 307 original Steve Canyon cartoons from August 1 to December 31, 1952, the December 1952 issue of "Saga: True Adventures for Men" which includes the article "Steve Canyons Girls," an Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity publication on the Miss Mizzou Scholoarship Pageant of 1958, photocopies of newspaper clippings and photocopies of pages from Savitar (the yearbook of University of Missouri--Columbia). The newspaper clippings deal mostly with the selection of Bek Stiner as the model for Miss Mizzou and Milton Caniff and Bek Stiner's visit to the University of Missouri in 1952. The pages from Savitar highlight the Miss Mizzou Scholarship Pageant.

"The collection spans the centuries from the ancient Greeks to the nineteenth century philosophers, but the emphasis is on the classical authors, augmented by modern philosophy and criticism. The medieval Christian philosophers are also represented. Since the collector was a Platonist, it is expected that the collection of works of Plato and the critical works would be large." (The Thomas Moore Johnson Collection, page 3). The oldest imprint is 1494 and there are several hundred volumes with publication dates from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

The University of Missouri Collection is comprised of publications emanating from the University of Missouri System and the Columbia campus administrative and academic offices. These publications include printed and/or published books, newsletters, yearbooks, catalogs, directories, pamphlets, manuals, newspapers, and documents. Manuscript materials are not included. Works by faculty members published off campus are accepted as gifts and purchased as funds are available. This collection is complemented by University of Missouri material in University Archives. While there is some duplication of material, the University of Missouri Collection (SPEC-M) Collection focuses on published material, while University Archives is the depository of official records of the University of Missouri at Columbia as well as of the administrative records of the University of Missouri System. The University Archives also houses and preserves private papers, organizational records, and manuscripts that relate to the history of the University and the University System.

McGuffey, William Holmes, 1800-1873. Historic textbook collection.

Title: Historic textbook collection. 1770-1929.

The volumes date from 1770-1929. Most were published in the centers of textbook production--New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago and Cincinnati--but cities across the country are also represented. The books are useful today as a survey of pedagogical methods and contents as well as a portrayal of the American popular mind of the day. Values, morals, and religious piety were imparted in addition to the subjects covered in the books. Ideologies supporting the superiority of certain nations and races, concepts which are anathema today, were expounded. Works by familiar authors such as William Holmes McGuffey, Charles W. Sanders, Lindley Murray, Charles A. Goodrich, and Samuel G. Goodrich abound in the collection, which is supplemented by the microfiche collection American Primers, which has a guide available.

Title: Comic Art Collection. 1834-

After consideration of the totality of comic art, the curriculum needs of the campus, the strengths of other U.S. libraries and the overall availability of comic art materials, it was decided the MU Libraries would endeavor to collect underground comic books, graphic novels, and published reprints of classic comic strips and cartoons. A core reference collection would be developed. Gifts of other types of comic art would be accepted based on their usefulness to library users. Many significant materials received to date were donated by their creators, such as the V.T. Hamlin Papers Collection featuring Alley Oop; and the Frank Stack Papers featuring Dorman's Doggie, The Adventures of Jesus, and Amazons (some of which were published under the pseudonym of Foolbert Sturgeon). The Mort Walker Collection featuring Beetle Bailey, Hi and Lois, etc. includes material originally donated by Mort and Betty Walker and has been added to with selected purchases and other donations. The Comic Art Collection also holds donations from private collectors, such as the Allen C. Bluedorn Collection of Comic Books. The Edgar E. Martin Papers Collection, which includes the continuities Thomas Harris wrote for Edgar Martin's Boots and Her Buddies as well as other Boots materials, were placed on deposit. Special Collections' staff have continued to add material supplemented with private donations, creating the V.T. Hamlin Papers Collection II with additional Hamlin and Alley Oop material, and the Edgar E. Martin Papers Collection II expanding on the existing Boots and Her Buddies material.

Title: Frank Luther Mott collection of American best sellers, 1662-1945. 1662-1945.

The earliest book Mott considered for inclusion was Michael Wigglesworth's The Day of Doom (Cambridge: Samuel Green, 1662), and the latest books were Betty McDonald's The Egg and I (Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott), Samuel Shellabarger's Captain from Castille (Boston: Little Brown), and Kathleen Windsor's Forever Amber (New York: Macmillan), all published in 1945. Mott defined best sellers as books known (or believed) to have had total sales equal to one percent of the population of the continental United States (or the English colonies in the years before the revolution) for the decades they were published. Omitted were Bibles, hymnals, textbooks, almanacs, cookbooks, doctor-books, manuals and reference books.

Focus of the collection is on Mort Walker's visit to the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1992 as a Scholar-in-Residence, including the unveiling of a bronze statue of Beetle Bailey. The collection includes original cartoons, animation cels, books, lithographs, photographs, and posters donated by Walker to the University Libraries. It also includes newspaper articles about the visit, and reproductions of Walker's work as editor/art editor of Showme, a humor magazine produced by students of the University of Missouri, 1946 and 1947.

Title: Sanborn fire insurance maps of Missouri collection. 1883-1992.

Documenting the layout of 390 Missouri cities from 1883 to 1951, the 1283 maps in the collection are an invaluable research tool for urban historians, architectural historians, environmentalists, genealogists and preservationists. The large scale (1:600) offers detailed information on the use made of commercial and industrial buildings, their size, shape and construction material. Some residential areas are also mapped. The maps show the location of water mains, fire alarms and fire hydrants. They are color-coded to identify the structure (adobe, frame, brick, stone, iron) of each building. Microfiche copies of the maps are also available. Commercially prepared microfilm of maps for 55 Missouri cities dating from 1941-1992 supplement the collection.
